ABOUT ROCK THE BLOCK
Rock the Block Society is a community-powered nonprofit on a simple mission: make live music easier to access, easier to join, and easier to belong in. We build welcoming, low-barrier music experiences in public and community spaces.
MISSION & HISTORY.
Our Mission
We create inclusive, accessible, community-first live music events that reduce barriers for audiences and performers — especially people who are often left out due to cost, confidence, experience level, or lack of welcoming spaces.
Where We Started
Rock the Block grew out of years of community music-building through Mechanics of Music in New Westminster — watching what happens when you make music friendly, practical, and open to real life. The more we hosted jams, showcases, and public pop-ups, the clearer it became: the appetite is huge… but the barriers are real.
So we formed Rock the Block Society to focus on the “infrastructure” that makes community music possible: portable sound + staging, volunteer coordination, partnerships with local orgs and businesses, and programming designed for participation over perfection.
Where We’re Headed
More pop-ups. More neighbourhood stages. More ways for first-timers to join in. More opportunities for local artists to be featured — and supported.
COMMUNITY CHALLENGES.
Creating accessible public music events comes with real challenges — and we plan for them on purpose:
-
Cost barriers: Ticket prices, gear, and paid spaces can exclude people fast. We prioritize free/low-cost programming and an access-first mindset.
-
Confidence barriers: Many people want to play but feel “not good enough.” Our events are built for beginners, returners, and first-time performers.
-
Space + logistics: Permits, power, weather, noise limits, and accessibility needs take planning. We build systems so events are smooth, safe, and welcoming.
-
Equitable opportunity: Local artists deserve visibility and support. We aim to feature diverse performers and create clear pathways to participate.
When you support Rock the Block, you’re helping remove these barriers in practical ways — not just talking about access, but building it.
PARTNERS.
Rock the Block Society is stronger with collaborators. We partner with local businesses, community organizations, artists, and schools to create events that feel rooted, welcoming, and easy to say “yes” to.
Partnership can look like:
-
Hosting a pop-up or community jam at your space
-
Supporting a stage, sound kit, or access fund
-
Cross-promoting events and community calls
-
Providing in-kind support (gear, food, printing, services, volunteers)
If you care about community, creativity, and making the city feel more alive — we should talk.
